Newburyport MA Area Info
Newburyport is a lovely seaport city in the northeastern corner of Massachusetts, where the Merrimack River meets the Atlantic. As the birthplace of the United States Coast Guard and Life-Saving Service, this year-round destination boasts so much history and culture. People move to “the Clipper City” for its coastal beauty and relative proximity to Boston, as well as its arts scene and unequaled historic architecture. Visitors come by car, train and boat for shopping, dining, and a never-ending calendar of family events.
Summer means free outdoor concerts and movies at Waterfront Park, but the biggest event is the nine-day Yankee Homecoming, which starts in late July. Other festivals happen over Memorial Day and Columbus Day weekends, and there is a special shopping event called Invitation Night held on two Friday evenings each in May and December. For fun anytime, boats along the riverfront wharf offer trips for whale watching, fishing, sunset viewing, and narrated tours.
The two northerly tips of Plum Island are also part of Newburyport’s city limits. This barrier beach on the south side of the Merrimack River’s mouth has long been a special place to call home. Once an artist’s community, it’s now a sought-after site for both seasonal and full-time living. Most of the residential section of the island belongs to the town of Newbury, and the rest is a federally managed wildlife refuge that draws bird watchers from throughout the Northeast.
The housing inventory in Newburyport always includes a variety of single family homes, historic half-houses, beach homes, and condominiums for all budgets. From the ship captain’s houses that line High Street, the city’s uptown backbone, to character-filled original cottages on Plum Island, there really is a home for everyone’s taste.
Newburyport is situated along the Merrimack River and Atlantic Ocean, 35 miles northeast of Boston. It is bordered by Salisbury to the north, Amesbury to the northwest, Newbury and its salt marshes to the south, and West Newbury to the west.
